Solar Tax Credits

In the state of Massachusetts, there is a Residential Renewable Energy Income Tax Credit that is applicable to solar (photovoltaics and solar thermal), and wind installations. Homeowners will receive a credit of 15% of the installed system cost, capped at $1,000. The state tax credit is available only for installed systems on an individual’s primary residence.

Federal Tax Credit

  • Is currently 30% for installations beginning January 1, 2022 through December 31, 2032.
  • Is 30% for construction projects beginning before 2025.
  • Was 26% for installations mechanically complete (installed but not necessarily connected to the grid) from December 31, 2019  through  December 31, 2021.

If the federal tax credit exceeds tax liability, the excess amount may be carried forward to the succeeding taxable year. The excess credit may be carried forward until at least 2033, it is unclear whether the unused tax credit can be carried forward after then.
