Critter Guard to prevent small animal infestations is something E2 offers as an ad-on with every solar installation. But why, is it really necessary, and is it worth the additional cost?
Reasons you may want critter guard:
- Preventing Damage: Squirrels (and other small animals) are known to chew on wires, and if they make their way under your solar panels, they can damage the wiring or other components. This can lead to expensive repairs or replacements. The critter guard helps keep them away from your solar system and helps protect your panels and the wires underneath them from potential damage caused by critters.
- Protecting from Nesting: Squirrels may seek shelter under the panels, using the space to build nests. This can cause debris to accumulate, block airflow, and lead to overheating or efficiency issues with your panels. Squirrels/chipmunks are creatures of habit, once they find a safe place to nest they will continue to return, so it’s not enough to just clear the nest once. The best safeguard is a perimeter of critter guard around the panels to prevent any repeat events.
- Pest Control: Besides squirrels, other critters like birds, rats, or raccoons may also find the panels appealing as a nesting spot. The critter guard prevents them from getting under the panels and causing further issues like droppings or other debris.
- Cost-Effective Solution: Compared to the cost of repairing or replacing damaged panels or wiring, installing a critter guard is a relatively inexpensive solution.
What if I didn’t opt for critter guard during install and now I have a problem?
If E2 Solar did your solar system install, we are able to come out on a time and materials basis to help reconnect and repair any chewed wires. You must have the critters removed prior to the E2 Solar crew coming to fix the work (we will clear the empty nest if it’s underneath our panels). If you choose to add the critter guard at this time to prevent future issues, we will do our best to consolidate the work into a single visit. If you did not have your solar system installed by E2 solar, we can refer you to a 3rd party solar servicer.
Is the critter guard invincible?
The short answer is, no. But it is a great preventative measure to keep pests out from under your solar panels. Additionally, most critter guards come with a warranty, so if we do need to come out and fix it for any reason- it will be of no cost to you.
Other considerations: Leaves have been known to build up on the critter guard. They are easily removed, but can be aesthetically unpleasing while they gather.
